i would stay away form the 55g . the 12" in width makes it really hard to decorate. so with that being said i would go with a 40 breeder or a 75 gallon. i prefer the cichlids as well. glad to have you here.
thank you,
david

it is basically a 75 gallon but only 3' instead of 4' and a few inches shorter.

wow.with cichlids they tend not to use the top portion of the tank. also that tank is some serious $$$. i would check out CL and get a used one. almost all my tanks have come from there.

so where are you from. the only problem with CL is that the filter dont normally work and they do not come with a heater. i purchased my 75 for $120 but i have to get a heater and filters. also i tend to wait a long time until i find a really good deal.

Hey just an fyi. African seem to do better in a longer tank. Height is not as imporant. Although some peacocks and other African do like the top of the tank. If you want to do it right and be happy for a while I would do 125gal. As you can see on this site most peoples comments are I need a bigger tank or i need another tank. It works out cheaper in the long run when you deside your 55 or 75 or 90 is to small. Also I would consider a wet dry system. Thay are one of the best to have with little troubles and easy to maintain. They are also great on keeping water perameters in line. You can also put your heater in them this helps hide it as well as keeps it from breaking. I can help you with making a sump that would save on money. If you need any more help or have any more questions hit me up.

Have a great day.

Nelson

I'd go with a 75g for starters. 40g will be too small in about 2-3 months. 50-55g as David mentioned is too hard to decorate because it's so narrow. I started with a 75g and was happy for about 3-4 months, then got a 110g, then a 125g...then they started having fry so I got a 20L, then the fry grew up and I got a 72g bowfront for them, then I had even more fry and got 2 10g's as grow out tanks along with the 20L and I recently got a 40g breeder. So to make a long story longer: (haha...) bigger tanks save you money in the long run... so find a spot; figure out your maximum size, and spend money on a nice large tank.

That's the way it is with CL. But like mentioned you can find great deals if your patient. I got a 75gal with stand and a 55gal for $140. I did have to re silicone the 75gal though. I have also gotten good heaters for $10 each. I also got a 10gal with hood lights and filter for $10. An emperor 400 for $20. It just takes patience and hawking several deals at once.

I wish I could get a 100gal though.........

New Tank 858205 I'm in quest of a 200-ish gal now...... Always go with the biggest tank you can afford. You will wind up buying one later if you dont.
Oh keep an eye out for a 20 something gallon for a quarantine tank. Its always when you don't have one that you need one.
