PostSubject: I have JD WIGGLERS!!!!   I have JD WIGGLERS!!!! Icon_minitime4/14/2010, 9:51 pm

So uhm... I just walked past my tank, and found a whole pile of wigglers. I am assuming they are JD's because the one guy is guarding it pretty good.

Here's some funny things though...

1. I originally had 3 Jacks in this tank.. It's just a temp tank (30 gallons), but they are small.. like 2.5-3 inches. I removed the largest one, who was 3+ inches because he was being a bully. He got moved to a different tank about 3 days ago.

2. I also have clown loaches, and earth eaters in this tank. So maybe it's earth eater eggs??

3. I never seen eggs. I look in this tank EVERY day.

Any clues.. and help... I've never had fish fry.

Sorry for the bad pictures... the whole side of the tank inside is covered in sand.

I would say they are Jack Dempsey fry unless the eartheater is the one that is guarding it. Also, that seems small for Jacks to breed, but I've had mine try at that size.

No. They are just regular Jacks.

If they survive, then yes, I will be growing them out.

Is it normal for the male to guard them? The female wants nothing to do with them..

I know nothing about keeping fish fry, so I guess if they bred on their own, they can take care of them on their own. lol.

Yes, the male will guard the eggs. Totally normal. Whatever is guarding them is what bred them, so that should make telling who made them very easy! lol! And the parents will raise them to a certain point and guard them the best they can, but keeping them alive once they are free swimming will be the hard part. The other fish in the tank will view this as an opportunity to snatch up some live food!

Stage of growth looks like this:
Eggs
Wigglers
Semi-swimmers (not much different from free-swimmers only they are just starting and will stay towards the bottom of the tank.
Free-swimmers
Fry
Juveniles
Adults

You can remove them from the parents when they become free swimming, which will be in a little less than a week. Good luck!
