Jack Dempsey Cichlid (Cichlasoma octofasciatum) Normaljack

Size - 8 inches
pH - 7.0
Temp. - 75 degrees Fahrenheit
Minimum Tank Size - 55 Gallons
Origin - Guatemala, Honduras, Yucatan
Diet - Frozen and Pelleted food including bloodworms, brine shrimp, and cichlid pellets
Care Level - Intermediate
Temperament - Moderately Aggressive

The Jack Dempsey is a tough cichlid who's name comes from the boxer and his mean temperament. Jack Dempseys are a hardy fish that needs lots of space given that its maximum size can be 8-10 inches. In order to grow them into adults, make sure you feed them a diverse diet of frozen and pelleted foods including frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp and cichlid pellets. These fish display wonderful colors and are very easy to sex as mature adults. The females have a heavy spangle under the mouth along the jawline. The males have distinct spots or spanlgles all over his body. The picture above is a male. When breeding, the Jack Dempsey will select his mate by displaying dark colors and showing many antics including chasing each other and even lip-locking to test the mates strength. The female will lay 500-800 eggs on a rock or inside a cave. The eggs will hatch in about 3 days. Once the eggs have hatched, the parents may move the fry around in many burrows made in the substrate. A fun fish to watch and keep, if you have the tank space.
