my recommendations: Eco Complete, Flourite, pool filter sand. Many use the Mineralized Top Soil method and put their gravel of choice over the top soil. No single gravel works the best, it's what works for you and your water quality where you are. Stick to a medium-fine sized gravel though.

home depot, but you have to do some reasearch to mineralize it yourself. may have to wait until it's warmer to do that. if you look online you can also find mineralized top soil from people who've already processed it.

If you are planning to setting up smaller tank then go with Eco Complete as its ready to go, nothinng to do further and it looks nice. Petco has it on sale right now. I just set up a 75 gallon tank and i used miracle grow organic top soil and capped it with gravel. You can use gravel or sand, i had old sand blasting gravel laying aroun.
