| I had a terrible thing happen for the past month. ALL my beautiful Bettas dies. Dropping off like flies for about a month. At first I thought they had a desease of some kind but ruled that out. They would be fine and healthy one day and dead the next. I narrowed it down to cold water in there jars. With the A/C running full strenghth I'm thinking it was cooling there jars down to much. I have a few females in a sorority tank and they are fine. Just all males and females in jars died. I had four picked out to go to a California show last week end but they dead instead. I'm going to be getting a red male from a friend so maybe I can start over. | |

| Thanks all. Actually it feels good not having 50 jars to do 100% wc on twice a week. LOL Think I'll rest awhile before getting back into them. I'm waiting now for my Angels to get big enough to pair up and breed. | |

| Yes but I would rather have sold them and made some money on them. Plus I was planing on breeding my show winners and there fry would have been more valuable so it was a great loose.LOL | |

| So sorry Whisper.... .... All my betta health problems have been related to 'too low' temperatures as well. Using heated tanks and glass dividers seemed to stop all of that. If I ever get either of my black based males to breed - I'll let you know. | |

| Yes divided tanks are great unless you have about 50 males. I'm going to be getting a Red male from Karen MacAuley next month I hope. I have a few Combodian females to breed him to. They are the only ones to survive plus a few blues. There are in a sorority tanks with a heater. | |

| Just put them in 30L with underground filtration. Should be able to divide that into 20-30 cubicles. Call it the 'frat house'. I'd offer you my first fry. Looks to be coloring into irridescent blue and probable male. But I have no clue as to shipping - and he's a DoubleTail/CT cross, not your favorite HMs. I might have some HM/CT blue butterfly cambonian crosses next month. Tossed my daughter's 'patriotic HM' male and 'Solid IrridescentPurple CT' female out in one of my shallow pond lilly ponds. I'll be netting everything out of it the end of August. (trying the breeding method listed in one of my books) Have no idea if I'll net anything other than the pair and a bunch of tadpoles though. Last year I got a bumper crop of fancy guppies from this pond. [img] [/img] | |

| I can offer an answer to heating problems in the way I store my own bettas, it is not very pretty but it works very well. I use 1/8 in aqua net and zip ties to make 4x4 cups of sorts then line them up in a bus tub with a heater in the middle. I have drilled a hole in the side of the tubs for water out put and put a drain cover on it just in case. the aqua net is small enough that the bettas cannot reach eachother and also allows for great water flow and easier cleaning with the added benifet of being able to heat all the water to the proper temp. If you choose to try this method be sure that when creating the cups that you zip tie from the outside as when you cut the ends they may be sharp. Also it allows for eaiser breeding as I simply pick the female I wish and move her in her cup to the breeding tub (great interaction between the pair). I do also sujest storing males and females in different tubs, I have found that storing them in the same tub causes the males to loose intrest in breeding and it takes twice the time to get him to build a nest once in the breeding tub. I hope this helps. | |

| that does sound pretty cool trodai.
sorry to hear that whisper! especially before a show too. Guess there's no way to partition the fish area from the rest of the room to get dual temperature zones? floor to ceiling curtains or a folding screen to maybe keep the draft off the jars? | |

| I found this on Ebay. It lays on the shelf and the jars can be put on it. If I go back to showing Bettas again I'm going to get a couple.

| ooh nice. they gets a heating pad :) Also, if it gets really cold if you prefer your room cold, you can cover the shelf with something to create a microclimate, much like what you'd do for a mini greenhouse shelf. | |

| Whisper, instead of keeping each male in a jar, what about making a long plexiglas tank, either split by plexiglas, or by the heavy duty screening used on doors, the dark thick stuff. If aggression is the issue, you could use black plexiglass dividers. Then use a canister filter with heater, or even a sump with heater. The out flow would be a split line taking out, and the same for the water from the filter into the chambers. This way you would have clean gently flowing water going into each fish home. | |
