i was at my LFS in Riverside CA. and i saw some awesome looking "koi swordtails" they looked spectacular enough, but at the cost of 4$ each. tempted i bought 4. after tht they died one every day. while every thing in my tank were absolutely fine and thriving(i even had new-born wriggling cichlid babies at the time) and i knew my water was good. i can attribute it to they just werent hardy enough. then i thought about how how much line breeding it took to get that color morph just right. while there isnt anything wrong with line-breeding in moderation along with a keen eye for culling stock, there's a limit where the quality of the fish is concerned.

as a result i think im going to go for something else. Platys are the PoorMan's swordtail. and i knw there are some exotic color morphs out there, and ill be willing to spend the extra $ on those when i find them.

I've had the same problem. Our LFS gets in some fantastic looking ones but they never survive. I just can't understand that.

Line breeding and especially inbreeding is going to cause a weaker line of fish over the long haul, same thing with uv sterilizers. Look at the Angel fish, some lines are extremely difficult to get past wiggler stage. Cross breeding with wilds is one way of strengthening your lines and should be part of any sustained breeding program.

I think the inbreeding has alot to do with it.I got some Koi swords awhile back. they
slowly died out after a few months. now i got neon swords and they been doing great for months, spitting out fry about every 28 days or so. Go figure.? Gotta love those swords anyhow..:)
