| Ok so my son has a 75g tank with 2 big Oscars in it. He's tiried of taking care of them and wants to get rid of them. So what I want to know is when he does that I want to get some discus to put in it. My question is how many can I put in a 75g.?...........Also does anyone want these oscars? They are to big to ship so you would have to pick them up....................And who has discus to sell?( cheap LOL ) |

| if your on the water quality alot, then 10. if you get some big adults then 7.
my 72 bow has 9, but nothing else is in the tank, just 2 cories to clean up and a pleco. |

| Most Discus sites will say no less then 10 gallons per adult fish... But even then you have to be on top of your water quality. If you do the somewhat normal feeding of brine shrimp, blood/black worms, beef heart, flake/pellet food. You will have to always be on top of water quality. If they are adults it is not so bad I suppose but a growing discus needs to eat way more often to reach full size say 3+ times a day in small amounts. It can really mess with the water quality. |

| Ok thanks. Are they going to be as messy as the oscars? If so maybe I won't get any. |

| I won't say they are real messy. They like to eat their food in two different ways. From my experience they will eat the food they really love while it is still free floating and the food they like but not as much they let hit the bottom. They then suck in water and blow it out at the food to stir/break it up then eat away. They are hungry little fish and are pretty good about eating all the food you give them especially if you are doing small more frequent feedings but this will cause the water to become fouled more quickly thus more water changes are needed to keep them really healthy. Nitrates are another problem caused by overfeeding and unfortunately many discus do not fair well in high concentrations of nitrate so again the water changes are important. I am planting out the tank with swords and other plants that like warm water to help mitigate the nitrates but I still do at least one water change a day. They are no where near as messy as Oscars that's for sure. They are also not as hardy but just like an Oscar they have great personalities once they get used to you. They are really not "that" hard to keep. The tank raised discus are just about like any other fish the difference is that unlike other tanks where people just forget about doing a water change for a month and everything is just fine your discus might not make it... so in other words if you are used to keeping up on tank maintenance and are not shy about cleaning a tank you'll be fine.

| they require more work than other fish. if i skip a wc, problems could arise. you cant just buy tetras or cories from your local lfs and add them to your main tank becuse they could get your discus sick. or mix your discus with other discus, without some serious quanteen. temp of about 80-86 are required and you have to age your water if your ph goes over.2 in 24 hrs.
it requires homework, but in the end you will have fish not many people dont understand how to keep alive more than a few months.
jujst start with good livestock! |

| Discus are amazing beautiful fish to keep but they are alot of work .over filtration is key IMO. i wish i never gave mine up. i used to have (2) 125 gal tanks both had (2) 2217 eheim canister filters and (1) wisper 110 filter.i had 12 adult discus in each, all between the 6-8in size.they are also awesome to watch when they breed... i used to feed them live black worms, and my own frozen beef heart mixture. i know people will give me a hard time about the black worms but personally i think that they are the best thing to feed them. unfortunately black worms can get expensive and are hard to clean. most people do not like using them b/c if not cleaned properly they can get the fish sick from parasites. |
