In my tank of Apple snail tank there are empty shells left from snails that have died. Should I leave them in the tank or take them out. Do the shells help provide calcium for the other snails? The shells are completely empty.

Im not a snail expert... but I would think unless you see something fuzzy growing out of it, leaving it in would be ok. One of my male bettas ate a hitch-hiking snail that got into his "apartment" (he is in a floating breeder) and the shell is still in there, empty. But that is just my thougths, which dont amount to much advise at all, lol.

I have never had any problems leaving the shells in.

Even if there is anything left in the shell, smaller snails will have it cleaned out in little time and the shell itself will not cause any problems in the tank.

    Just my experience...

I have empty snail shells in a few tanks . No problems by them . and I have seen them slowly disappearing . So , are other snails consuming the calcium rich empties ? I believe so. And if it is in a tank that has Malaysian Trumpet Snails , they DO eat other snails shells .
Just my 2 cents ,,, Ray

I know huh? sometimes it's like pulling teeth talking to people on this site.

p.s. as long as there is nothing rotting in the shells you'll be fine....

It's a personal preference thing actually.

Do you want to leave them in or not?

They pose no risk to the tank and can provide some additional calcium as they break down.

I tend to leave them in a while myself. If the shrimp find a dead snail before I do, they will take care of the clean up portion of it which is why the shells stay in there for a period of time. Otherwise, if I find a dead one, I'm pretty quick to remove them.
