PostSubject: All my fish are "scratching"   Sun Apr 03, 2011 11:04 am

All my fish are scratching against anything they can get a hold of in the tank. I have a 55 fw mod planted tank. All of my parameters are great. My water is clear and the fish are spawning......So why are all of the fish scratching. The fish have no lesions or skin issues at all. Everyone looks happy and healthy. Could they have a reaction to a added chemical like Flourish or Leaf Zone? Maybe like an allergic reaction? Please help. I do not add salt to my tank because of the plants. I run a carbon-less cycle that works well for the fish and the plants. Please help....Any advice is appreciated!!!

It could be ICH.. somtimes u cant see ich when it first starts out and is under the gills and if thats the case u have to treat the whole tank and that could be dangerous to ur fish and plants..But on the other hand if its ammonia use some stresscoat that can help till u get ur ammonia levels down.

If you see small gold like speckles around their body I would say Oodinium (or velvet disease) Fish like to scratch themselves against things with this disease as well.

There is no gold flecks or speckles. Is it possible that it is flukes?

Got to be some kind of parasite so go with a "cover-all" parasitic med., be careful if you keep tetras, a lot of the meds can't be used on them. good luck

Garlic juice and ground up garlic that they can eat is the best thing for parasites. You can buy jarred ground garlic at the grocery store. fish love it and it will do the trick.
