PostSubject: white moss forming on driftwood. What is it?   3/28/2011, 10:58 am

Hey guys. Im new to the world of live plants and started a 10 gallon planted tank with some of my egg carring ghost shrimp in it. I also got about 60 guppies from a friend of mine that was being overrun, so I took 2 fry I found in that bunch and threw them in there too. Well, first off there is a piece of driftwood with some anubis on it and now there seems to be mold or some white fuzzy junk forming all over the wood. I have no idea what this is. This tank is set up just like all my other tanks with a hang on filter and a heater and 2 airstones. Is this actually mold or is another plant in my tank spreading? I looked on here and searched youtube to see if I could find an answer, but havent found anything yet. All the fish, shrimp, and little snails that came with the driftwood/anubis plant seem to be doing fine, but the white stuff keeps spreading. Any advise? Thanks for reading and for any suggestions you guys may offer. Jon

Favorite Fish:: I really love the big boys, but I have a place in my heart for all fish. I guess my current favorite is my Chocolate (turning Orange) Oranda.

It should be harmless. We have a bunch of new driftwood. I boiled mine but my daughter just rinsed hers. The stuff she put in her aqarium was "heat treated" so it is safe, but it still grew the white stuff. To me it looked like a white algae-fungy.

I looked it up and found out that is is a normal process and should be harmless for your fish. If it bugs you, remove the driftwood and scrub it off and then put it back.

Hers is mostly gone now after 2 weeks.

Hey thanks Julie. That was helpful. Helps eleviate alot of stress I had about what was growing inside my tank. I wasnt too concerned for the fish and shrimp, as they seem not even to notice, but was kinda worried it could overrun my plants... Now that I know it is harmless, I will worry much less. Thanks a ton again, Jon.
