| This is one of my dogs, a bullmastiff, 10 months of age, named Canis Major (Major for short!). This weekend we went to the Pet Expo and he got his AKC Canine Good Citizen certification. This is basically the first step towards therapy dog training. The cool thing is that the Pet Expo was held in a large, noisy convention center with loudspeaker commentary of dog contests and agility demonstrations, hundreds of dogs on leash, lots of barking and confusion, lots of vendors selling goods and services, rescue groups, and at least three large, fuzzy mascots walking around and frightening the dogs, lol! Even in this chaotic environment he passed the test, and we are very proud! | Mastiffs are such gentle giants. Love them. Your Dane looks like he has some black Lab in him. Does he? His head looks to heavy and snout is to short for a full Dane. Maybe it's just the picture. Either way they are both great looking dogs. | |

As for the dane, we got him from the Great Dane rescue group, and they insist he is pure bred, and my vet thinks he is pure bred, just poorly bred (reverting back to the greyhound traits, with a "whippety" appearance and getting away from the mastiff side of the genetic makeup). We were still not sure. We got him one of those genetic test kits and it came back as mostly dane with a couple of drops of ROTTWEILER! We are really not seeing any of that in him, that's for sure, and the vet says he can't see any Rottie aspects to him whatsoever, so the jury is still out. He's an awesome dog and we will always wonder! I got him because I thought he might be a mix and considering the tragic health problems of most purebred Danes, I was hoping being a mix would mean a healthier life. He's taller than our bullmastiff and is 125 pounds, but is healthy as a horse and can go from zero to 60 in 3 seconds! :-p

| Both breeds are awesome! I lost my GD (180 lbs of him) in a divorce!... Then the &^&%( gave him away! Kept it clean but it still rankles on me 18 years later! | |

| Congrats on the CGC! That's so exciting! I love the pics that you posted....I have 2 English Mastiffs and a Great Dane. All are males; GD is brindle; one of the mastiffs is a fluffy brindle; and other mastiff is apricot. None are rescue - all are pure bred but the next dog we get, I want to get a rescue mastiff (but this will be a ways down the road..It currently feels like a zoo, between the 3 dogs and the fish!). | |

Congrats again! So exciting! That is great news! I too, as the owner of a misunderstood breed that often has legislation against it, I'm glad to see you pursuing and achieving goals with your bully as well. Even though since day one in puppy class with Major we've been the only bully breed in class, our obedience club embraces the guardy/bully breeds and wants to support owners who want to advance their dog in obedience events. Here's a recent pic of Major: [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
