I think i made a few mistakes this go around with this bubble tip anemone. First mistakes, I only had a 15 watt 10k/actinic light on it for the first couple months, and i was keeping it in a 20 gallon tank. I upgraded a few weeks ago to 4 T5 lights (2 actinic, 2 10k). The Another problem I had was that my nitrate levels spiked well over 80ppm. I did some drastic water changes the past couple of weeks and now the nitrates are down to a safe level.

The anemone had moved to a different spot, and i started noticing that the mouth wasn't tight anymore. From what i have read this is a bad sign. It still inflated pretty big, but wouldn't eat. The clownfish were still hanging around it.

The photos show how it looks this morning.

my concern this morning was that i was able to take it right off the rock without any resistance. it has been spewing a lot of threaded mucus. it hasn't eaten in over a week, and will not react to food going into it's tentacles. it doesn't smell either.

it maybe pooping for lack of a better word but not attaching would make me worry can you put something over your powerheads to keep it from getting sucked in ?.
as far as not eating I only feed mine once a month or even less sometimes people over feed and it rotts inside the nem and will kill it they need light more than food.
do you have enough flow? it maybe adjusting to the new light as well.

that could be possible. it was eating like a pig for a while, and maybe it's just pooping like one. another concern is that when it inflates, the mouth isn't tight anymore.

what I would do is make sure your params are good and leave it alone and watch him. I have a Rbta thats usually the size of a football right now he's lucky to be the size of a golfball they are always changing. if its moving a lot take safety precautions with your powerheads until he stops moving a moving nem is an unhappy nem. I wouldn't bother trying to feed it will only irritate him more. as far as the mouth being open he is probably just expelling waste.

if that is the exact picture of your anemone pure white. It has expelled all of the algae from inside itself. You never want to buy white anemone. They should never have a lose grip that you can pull right off if they do then tat is not a good sign. Keep an eye out i never feed my anemone's i have several all hosts to clowns and also a rose anemone and it is 8 inches . I have 400 watt metal halide 20000k . I feed mysis in my water once a day with my fish feeding that way if they catch some they eat but i never putt food on them. If they feel starved or do not like there spot they will move to a good feeding spot . ANEMONE ARE FILED WITH WATER AND IF THE WATER BAD THE ANEMONE IS BAD. Be very cautious on buying anemones. SOme people breed them by stressing the anemone to almost death so they split in half . Never buy a white anemone

also you switching the lights like that u can photoshock the anemone and kill it . It basically got burnt and you killed the algae inside. Ask what lights they are under when you buy and keep that in mind you might have to put a shelf of rock over them to protect them a gradually brighten thier day. Look at elegance coral also it is a deep water coral that does not need a lot of light but it looks just like an anemone and it will host clowns

thanks for the advice. when i purchased him, he was a good color. i'm afraid i'm the culprit here in bleaching him out.

this is how he was this morning. and he's expelling again.

opinions needed HPIM1940

he gets really big at night, but his mouth still isn't closed all the way.

i'll take your suggestions, and i am hoping i can do something to save him. i have 2 switches on my lights so i can actually shut off 2 of the lights. i will try moving him under a ledge also, and slowly increase.

thanks for the input. I hope this helps me as well as others in the future.

he is spewing his algae. Now when the are expleed you must give them food until the build back up. It was the increase in light but also what are your water parameters? feed mysis and put a little flow over him just so his tenacles are flowing getting a plastic turky baster and put the mysis into the current not on him so almost the food goes over him. Im a lil concerend because his stump is so weak. Just keep a current and just watch the intensity of the lighting

Salt 1.023
Nitrates 20ppm
Nitrite - 0ppm
PH- 8.4
Alkaline - 280ppm

He is currently sitting under a ledge, and deflated, and his foot isn't fully secured on the rock.
I cut back the lighting to half (1- t5 ho 10k, and 1 -t5 ho actinic), or should i put back on the lighting that i had before i changed the light? it was a t8 10k/50actinic flourescent.

i would try to return the previous light if that was the happiest he was. but do you have any corals if so just leave the lights on and just keep him a lil shade. your salinity is a lil low i keep my tank at 25-26 its the closest thing to the ocean. that is the key to salt keep it simple and like the ocean

i do have some coral, and they have improved with the lighting. so i'll get the anemone tucked into some shade. i'll do a gradual increase in the salinity in the next few days, and see how that goes.
when it inflates at night i'll try some mysis. do you use live or freeze dried? i don't think any local stores carry live mysis.

freeze dried. what temp is your water
thats why your anenome comes out at night the light is not killing him if he is strong he will adapt and grow and make it throught

that is hilarious. i've been attached by one of my older clowns in a tank i had several years ago. she bit pretty hard.

so, that's the color i'm looking for in my anemone.

what lighting do you have? and size of tank?

ok fisrt all, what size tank is it, and post you water specs( numbers) are you running a skimmer? if not invest in one if you plan on keeping anemones, they make alot of waste. IF your anemone is bleached out then puting him directly under bright light is going to kill him. BTA are know to bounce back. Since in your last post you said it wasnt attached to anything. try moving him to a low/moderate flow area low in the tank and some good rock work and just leave it alone. Anemones can move so if it want to move it will when it wants to, or when its strong enough to the more you move it and position it and try this lighting out the more its just going to digress and become more and more stressed. BTA's are more of a rock anemone then sand. watch your clowns also, they can pester an injured or recuperating nem to death so block it off if you have to. keep your water right and consistent more then anything... you can run 20 on naitrats and 1.03 on salinity but if its always like that, you tank will be much more stable and grow better then if they vary from week to week and if the anemone isnt too far gone itll either bounce back or split

so true. nems in geneal are hard, hosting nems are harder..hard meaning more routine and stringent maintenance in a well established stable compatible system. bubble tips are probably the most forgiving of the hosting nems.
