PostSubject: Mangroves in an aquarium???   Mangroves in an aquarium??? Icon_minitime12/22/2010, 6:34 pm

I was just looking around on Ebay to see what other aquatic plants were being offered there, and found people selling mangrove seeds and mangrove seedlings saying it is a natural filtraion system and it can go in both fresh and salt water tanks..... I remember during the 4 yrs I lived in FL seeing all the mangroves growing along theedges of the canals, but I was also told it was illegal to cut them down..... (granted the people on Ebay selling the mangroves are in NC, so I am not sure what their laws are)

What are y'alls thoughts on mangroves in tanks (I know they get HUGE, but I have no idea how fast they grow).... Here is the discription one of the sellers give for the use of mangroves in an aquarium-
Quote :
Description:
The use of mangroves plants are for filtration in a saltwater aquarium, particularly for helping to reduce and control nitrates is not a new concept. It has been around for quite some time, but few aquarists have really known much about it. However, this is changing because more and more aquarists are looking for a "natural" method of filtration for their aquariums, so mangroves are drawing more attention all the time. Mud Filtration is not required to grow mangroves. They can be grown in a sump, refugium or directly in an aquarium. They are fed by absorbing nutrients and organics from the water, which in turn creates a natural filter for cleaning water. Mangroves not only have the ability to absorb nitrates, but phosphates and other organics as well. In fact, they remove organics so well from the water that they act as a replacement for a protein skimmer. When using mangroves you will notice your protein skimmer working less and less all the time. The more the mangroves grow and mature, the more they absorb the excess organics in your water, and the skimmer has nothing to remove and becomes obsolete. If you are a naturalist and don't want to have to use chemical additives or compounds to reduce and control nitrates in your aquarium, this is a very effective filtration method to consider.

I would think that if you get a mangrove, you would also want a pond so when it getto big for the tank you can stick it out in the pond? Or could you trim it to keep it small?

I assume you could trim it like a Japenese bonsae do in order to keep it small. Have to find out what light level they need.

Tell me how it works. I might try something like that in the future.

If I do get some (and I am very tempted as I have always loved they way the roots provide some unique auquascape, as well as hiding places for fish), it would be after the first of the year. Right now I am wanting to get some thoughts on this; especailly for fresh water since I have sen them growing in brackish and salt waer canals... and I only have fresh water tanks. The last thing I want to do is get something that I cant use in my tanks, lol.

It would be a very unique aquascape. If it doesn't work - you might think about some generic swap cypris saplings. They love the swamps around me! So they can handle submerged root systems in fresh water.

I have six seedlings in 2 of my tanks. I've had them about 2 months now. They have started to grow new roots off of the old ones and some have an added leaf. Seem to be slow growing for me. I think if I had my lights hanging above them they would do better.
I have them suction cuped to the back side of the tank with part of the stem and leaves out of the water.

They do the best in brackish. There are 3 main kinds, red, white and black all with different needs and such. They do grow slow and you can keep them trimmed down small. One end needs to be in the water and one out. Most folks get them rooted in their HOB's.

You would be better off looking for some local bog plants IMO.... Some of them flower quite nicely too.

The description of what they do is the same thing all plants grown in aquariums do.

They are to tall to put in my HOBs and I clean them out(HOB) every week or two. I like them (mangroves) and they are doing fine. If you want to try them give them a try. That's what it's all about. I got mine from, toptropical. com.

yes, I knew at least in Florida you could not damage or cut the down a mangrove tree, just didnt know which type. On Ebay I saw they were offering red, whie and "silver buttonwood" mangrove seeds, but no black. (which is another reason I posted this.... to make sure I dont possibly get something that could get me in trouble).

A bog plant would be any plant that grows 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the water, ditches are the best place to start looking! Dig them up and wash them off well and you should be good! I have done it a few times. I personally plan on getting some plant that grows around here that has some lovely purple flowers!

hmm... guess I need to look around more.... guess my biggest fear of getting a plant from the wild is parrasites and not getting all of them off then infecting my tank.
