We are fairly new fish lovers from Dothan. We have a 10g with a couple of mollys. So far they are my favorite. But were have a bit of trouble with our tank and not sure what to do about it. The entire tank turns bright green and stays that way. We've tested the water everything is perfect. We are now treating the water with an alge controllor. We were told the color would go away in a day or to, however its been this way for a while. Any sugestions?

You have an algae bloom in your tank.., heres what i've done before and it worked:

Try feeding your fish less for a while.
Do 25 -30% water changes every day. ( I had best results on the 4th day)
Set your timer on the lights very short ( maybe 2- 4 hrs max)
After 4th day clean your sponges on the filter to remove all algae left there.

If i were you i wouldn't add any additives on the water, i always tought the stores just wants to sell you thats it.., did like that twice and it worked just fine.

if you have any snails on the tank i wouldnt put any additives either.

Good Luck!.

If your tank is sitting near a window, you will need to block the sun. While you are using the controllor I would leave the light on the tank off. Do frequent water changes to keep the nitrates down. (50% every 3 or 4 days) Some live plants would also help. Flourish excel by Seachem has been used by a lot of people including me to fight off an alge bloom, it does the job, but I don't know if any of the pet stores in Dothan sell it. I get mine online. I just double the recommended dosage.

I live in Hartford, nice to know thier are others in this aera that keep fish.

I would turn off the lights for 3 or 4 days and block any light getting to the tank and do not feed during the black out. Yes your fish will be fine to go 3 or 4 days without food. After the black out period and some live plant Like Java fern or anubias (? spelling there sorry). Put your lights on a timer as for the first week set it at 6 hours a day, after that your can increase it to 8 then to 10 if you want. If algae starts growing again toss in more plants or decrease your lighting. Algae is not a bad thing but if your waters green do a black out. Careful with algaecide as they kill inverts and fish alike better if you can avoid them.Your tank has the nutrients for plants if algae is growing as algae is just a plant itself. How long has your tank been set up?

Thanks for all the information.

I checked the nitrate, the results where near 0. I have left the light off for several days the last time this happened, and I ended up changing the water. Partail changes were not working.

This is the thrid time this has happened.

the second time we added a live plant and the next day it was bright green and all my mollies were dead. However the neon tetra was still around.

This time the water stayed clear for about 4 days and then bright green again.

There is a lot of info on the net about the problem you have. Just type in "Aquarium green water" and you will find a boat load of info. My best guess would be the lighting and the water changes. If you are doing a regular water change every week and vacuming the substrate, you have no sunlight (bright light) getting to the tank, your not over feeding and your mollies are dieing and not the neons. my best is wrong. Check your nitrate in your water supply. You did cycle the tank?

Just let it ride, its not harmful to your fish at all. Fighting it only prolongs it, do the water changes but don't use any of the funky chemicals. Once it finally goes away you should never get another algae bloom again, if you fight it you will have a very very long battle ahead of you.

I you can find someone that will let you use a 8watt UV Sterilizer, it will make the tank clear in 5 to 7 day.
