First topic message reminder :

hey all,
as you know i have gotten lucky enough to have spawned discus in my community tank a few times.
seems like that was the easy part. the hard part is raising them to young juvies. or so i read.
so heres the start of it all.

Maybe I bet my little guys would go crazy for them. I thought I saw a dude in Fresno that sells worms on simply.

add malachite green to the tank to keep them from going bad once they are laid. keeps the fungus out

Alan t j...........Hopefully this isn't the case, but I have had two female Angel Fish and Discus go through the mating and egg laying process......You see it happen and it seems like a normal mating, but all of the eggs are infertile.

Why they do this is a mystery to me......I have had these same fish select the opposite sex and have successful mating...Go figure???

thanks dano, but they are a proven pair. i know what you mean with two females laying egss for some reason, it h appens.

i just got home an hour ago and ther is a clutch of eggs on the makeshift breeding spot. so wooo hoo.
i changed water yesterday and no eggs, so i guess they spawned this morning.

discus mike, are you sure its malachite gree and not meth blue?

I'm sure you are doing nothing wrong, discus are expensive because they are a pain in the butt to breed fish

It's you it's them. There are few reasons why they might go bad. One is the male is not mature enough. Too much water flow so eggs are not getting fertilized. Not enough water movment so the eggs are not getting proper water circulation this can cause fungus to get them. Lazy male not doing anything but getting the female to lay and then just stands by and watches. Could be 2 females.

You have fry hatch once right in the community tank?? So just give them time to adjust to the new home you made for them.

i hope your right.

i lowerd the flow on the sponge filter and they are getting so pampered.
im gonna let them try a couple of more times. if no magic happens then ill put them back in the community tank and try with the other pair instead.

daily w/c and all that good stuff.

the pair in the comunity tank are spawning once a week. if they lay eggs in the flows path then the eggs are not good.when they eggs away from the flow like on the flower pot on the bottom of the tank, wriggler will appear.

I would just leave the pair alone in the breeding tank for a month. What do you have in the tank for them to spawn on?? In the photo I don't see anything.

Add a flower pot or order a breeding cone. You could try some wood too. Mine like to spawn on the wood. Set up the spawning sight were you thing is the best. Then wait.

Ok, I thought it was a bit early for my pair to spawn again but they are busily cleaning the other filter intake tube. Its been about a week since the last spawn though.....

i have a breeding cave for plecos, its standing up for the pair.
the first time they spawned it was on this cave.

im guessing since we had all that rain the water is not right, maybe its not soft enough now. maybe high TDS or the PH went up. i havent checked yet.

i can see one fish pecking sometimes and the tubes are still out but now its been over a week without a spawn. im changing water constantly and feeding them my frozen mix 2-3 times a day.

i know once they go back in the community tank they the wrigglers will apear. i just know it.

you can go the safe route and use maroxy for the eggs to keep them from getting fungus. Also if your water is to hard it will make the eggs unpenetrable for the male to fertilize them. general rule of thumb is 2 parts r/o to 1 part tap water. also common for pairs to eat their first few spawns. they have to get the hang of it.
