| Corydoras aeneus, the bronze cory Maximum size in aquariums (min-max): 6 - 8 cm ( 2.36 - 3.15 in ) pH of water: 5.8 - 7.7 Water hardness (dGH): 4 - 12 °N Recommended temperature: 22 - 29 °C ( 71.6 - 84.2 °F ) Compatibility (temperament to it's family): peaceful Compatibility (temperament to other fish species): peaceful Place in the aquarium: Bottom levels Fish origin: South America They come in 3 color mutations, albino bronze and green A female 2 days before spawning Bronze fry a week or 2 old Corys are a very fun fish, think of a 5 year old kid that just ate a big bag of candy and you have the cory! They are active and do best in schools of 6 or more of the same kind. They are an omnivore and like veggi based pellets ad much as meat based pellets and they love the occasional treat of blood worms and other frozen foods. They need to have smooth sand for their substrate, anything rough will erode their barbells when they dig and may cause death. They go great in a planted tank but they will help quite a bit with the aquascaping of the plants, newly planted plants may be dug up if they don't like where you put them. Replant the plant in a different location till they like where you put their plants, once they are happy with the location it is very rare that they will mess with the plant again. They need to be with docile tank mates that will not harass them or they will always hide. keep any fish large enough to eat them out of the tank, or you may end up with 2 dead fish. the corys can lock their spines in place when threatened and end up lodged in the throat of their attacker and usually both fish die. Spawning them is quite easy, the best ratio is 2 males per female as the female is the one who chooses the mate. Condition them with meaty foods for a week or 2 and then do a 50% water change with the new water slightly cooler than the tank water, this simulates rainy season when the corys breed in nature. The act is quite a thing to witness! They are a substrate spawner and mine have always placed their eggs on the tank glass. The eggs can be moved to a hatching tank by using a razor blade to scrape them off the tank glass and then stick them on the hatching tank glass gently. Place air stones underneath the eggs and you will have wigglers within a few days. The young look like mini adults within the month. |

very good choice I thought you were going to do some kind of Vic. But I like this one just as much. Corys are very fun to have and I love how they like to be in groups. | |

| Mine have bred several times now. Very neat fish to watch. They will often rocket up to the top of the tank to grab a gulp of air. They are a shallow water fish, and should not be kept in super deep tanks. Other than that, I think Fern nailed this fish down. Very active and a great fish for beginners and experienced fish keepers in community tanks! | |
