Think about how to do the brine shrimp without buying a worthless fancy gagdet. Try a gallon jar. Ridged tubing to remove brine. Use your brains.

I have two going at all times. This is the easiest way to do it. ......Get a 2 litter bottle. Well cleaned. Cut the bottom off with an exacto knife. Now holding it upside down fill with warm water. set this in a heavy glass or something that will hold the weight of it. Now measure a length of hose long enough to reach the bottom so it fits into the cap which is now the bottom. On the end that is in the bottle put a bubbler stone. The other end hock up to a pump. Now add about 3/4Tbs. of Aquarium salt and about 1/2Tbs of eggs. Less eggs if you don't need that many. Now plug in the pump and let it run. In 24hrs. You will have fresh hatched Brine Shrimp.

I was going to start a new thread until I spotted this one. So here goes...

Last year the school I worked at was in the city, near a huge aquatic pet store. Purchased live brine shrimp from them and put them into five model systems - students were studying the effects of Oceanic acidification on plankton. Simple setups - used 1L glass cylinder vases (Purchased at Michael's), one stick-on-the-side sponge filter per vase, and placed on sunny window sill. Fed them a marine algae mix used for corals. (had to be refrigerated).... The 'control' model did so well that the students also got to see mating and offspring within two weeks!

So now I've moved to a rural district and that pet store is an hour away. I've had little luck in the past with hatching them out - so I'm planning to keep a breeding colony on hand. (that way I'm not rushed when it's time for the research project to start this year) Have an unused 5G. So I'll plan to set it up with the bubble filters and stock it with several tablespoons of live brine shrimp.

Here's the kicker: I don't have a fridge at this school. Do you all think that the shrimp will be fine if I take some of the cichlid's spirulia flakes, grind them to powder and feed that? It would make life so much easier... brine shrimp set up - Page 2 265353
