Measure:

H x W x L = sum

THEN divide the sum by 224.75

this will give you the correct volume including the lip.

Example: the average 55gallon is 48.25 x 12.75 x 21
48.25 x 12.75 x 21 = 12918.9375
12918.9375 divided by 224.75 equals 57.481gallons

But keep in mind that you're measuring the outside of the glass and not inside.

remember to subtract the thickness of the glass from your mesurements/
