Lots of Filtration...They need very clean water to spawn. I use 2 x AC110 + Sea clear wet/dry rated for 750gph pump + Rena XP3 on a $140g tank.

Spirulina based diet with occasional NLS Thera-A. I feed mine once a day. These fishes graze on algae all day long in the wild, So they constantly eat.

As for ratio 20-30% male to 70-80% female ratio. They are best kept in large comonies. I use to have atleast 20 individual in my colony when I use to have them. I have spawned a lot of these guys. Females hols a clutch of 8-12 fry on avarage. You do no thave to strip as they won't eat their young. They'll spit them out and you can grow them out with the parents. The only reason I strip is because they are a pain in the butt to collect.

But most important of all is consistency. You need to keep your water changes and feeding regiment at par. Goodluck on your breeding program.

Here's a guide how to sex 'em.

In my set up, I have a group of 2 males and 12 females. Too many males will cause alot of harrasment on the females leading to either ripped females or causing the female to spit her eggs. Plenty of crevices in your aquarium will do the trick for the females to retreat to. I would condtion my trops by feeding them just spirulina flakes and NLS cichlid formula. The group I have is tropheus duboisi halembe. Mines are so yellow, you will think they are kaisers except they have a blue heads. Watching a bunch of spotted babies swimming around is a sight to be seen!!!!!
