Hi everyone, I am new to this forum. My favorite fish are Sailfin Mollies. I am having to start over again. Two days ago my fish were doing wonderful, I fed them as always when I arrived at work. When I went to lunch I was talking to them and watching them swim all over. When I returned from lunch they were dead but 6. Then 3 more died before I got off of work. I believe someone put something in the tank. Yesterday I cleaned out the tank and changed the water. The filter media in the filters was bright pink. They have never been any other color but dark green when I have changed them out. The 3 fish that survived were my opaline gouramis and my female betta. All of my breeder sailfin mollies, male betta and pleco died. I am now trying to find someone who has wild green sailfin mollies, these are what I loved so much and lost.

Ouch sorry for the loss. I have never had pink either. Did you put any chemicals in the water? I dont know why It would be pink.

Welcome to the forum hope we can assist you in your problem.

No I did not put anything in it, but I have an employee who has been angry at me and she hurried up and left during the commotion. She has not even acknowledged what happened. She has not spoken to me since the incident. There are several people who have voiced that they think she did it. I have no proof, but I am taking extra precautions before putting more fish in there - like putting a lock on the cover.

Did you add water conditioner BEFORE you put the fish in?

This tank has been up and running for a year now. I do a partial water change every three or four weeks and it was done 2 weeks ago - did use my conditioner as always.

I use flakes ( Tetramin) to enhance fish color, but have used it for about 8 months.

Could be a big build up of pink colored flakes. Ive seen flakes change the color before. But honestly, this is the weirdest thing ive ever heard of.

Ok 2 different options:

Could be red algae(or pink)

Do you have pink or red gravel? Poly Resin that has been dyed will surely leak after some time.

But I'm going 75% red algae and 25% other reasons.

Then I'm guessing pink algae. Move the fish into a quarantine tank(if you have one), I would take a cup of the water and have it tested at petco/petsmart/local fish store and possibly take the filter media too. People at petsmart/petco are purty dum so it would be better to do it at a lfs.

If someone put something in it you would prob see alot of bubbles on the surface of the water. Maybe even be able to smell if something not supposed to be there was there. Was the water cloudy or weird???

I agree with redstar, it sounds like someone put a small amount of bleach in the tank. I've bleach washed clogged filter media and when its a light mix it turns pinkish.
I have a few dalmation sailfins but I'm not shipping till summer. Some of the males have a 2" sail though.
