I have two of these, different colors but the same fish.

He was white with black stripes when I got him.

Hes my favorite. Very mellow, was more of a gray/blue when I first got him.

Female hiding, (Male is inside above her)

The best full picture I could get of her.

one of the 'off color' babies. More of a gray blue, light shadows of possible stripes, but not very visable.

another of the 'off color' babies, more of a black on white instead of a blue on blue, but has the blue incandescent look to its gills and top of the head.

Are hybrids bad? I think they're kind of neat and might keep a few, but I am looking for someone to take some of them off my hands for me. . I can never get a good side picture of her because she shys away when someone walks near the tank, but this picture is very close, only the blues need to be swapped, more light than dark.

Are hybrid babies a bad thing though? Will they breed or am I safe?

the pic is of a Pseudotropheus demasoni so if that is it they are hybrids. male and female demasoni look identical. i think hybrids are trash. we only get so many from the wild and if you pollute the gene pool with hybrids you can mess up the species for good. the link below has a long conversation about it.

Well... I can give them away to someone who just wants some fish i suppose. I didnt plan on any of them breeding and I dont have it in me to just flush them or anything drastic... I want to keep a few of them to see what they turn out to look like but its looking like I am just going to pull my female out and put her in a tank on her own for the time being. She is the only female that has live babies so that should stop the breeding. Its a bummer that there are so many of them. Wish I had known before hand that they could cross breed like that. Even more bummed now that the 'expert' at the petstore had no clue what he was talking about. Fun stuff.

The " experts" at the pet store will say anything to sell a fish. It is better for them if they give bad advice and the fish die because you buy more, or get copious chemicals to add to your tank. Research before you buy. Fish are living things and deserve the best of care. It is your responsibility to learn as much as you can about what you keep. You will enjoy the hobby much more and it is better for your fish.
