I'm setting up a new tank and don't want to do the usual type of reef decorations instead I'd like to do a city scene with a car wreck. My question is what is safe to use for this. I have a some porcelain pieces from Dept 56 that i used for Christmas scenes are they safe to put in a tank?

You can basically put anything in your tank. As long as it hasn't been introduced to cleaners, and it won't dissolve and kill the fish.

Small porcelain pots can be used in fish tanks. They are great hiding places for fish, and are easy to clean. Ceramic pots can be used also, but I've never used them so I can't say.

I have used porcelain deco's in my tank. They can be so cutesy. I mostly use different size strawberry pots for hiding and breeding purpose.

Porcelain, plastic, tile, rock are generally safe to put in your tank, and if you are still concerned you can get aquarium safe clear paint and paint them and let cure. Wood you want to boil before adding to your tank to make sure no pesticides get in your tank (the smallest amount of pesticide can kill a whole tank).

Also you can use water and bleach (4 parts water to one part bleach), rinse well, and let dry on aquarium decorations. This mix will remove algae. the Key is to rinse well and let dry a day or two. Also you can add a dose of Prime or Stress Coat when you add the decor back if you are unsure if you have the bleach neutralized.

Rinse your decore with tank water before putting it in tank.
