I dont know much about goldfish but I have an orange fantail/veiltail goldfish. This fish is usually very fast eats well and well coordinated. Today he is very sluggish and has run into the wall and some ornaments. I just did a water change and gave him some peas. He kinda went after them and stopped quickly. Any ideas? I dont think he is dire yet but I am concerned.

Sounds like bloat. Fast him of all foods for about 4-5 days. Then start the frozen, blanched peas crushed up small. Give him only this for about 4 days. Sometimes it's so severe even this doesn't help but good luck with him. Bloating is caused from over feeding.

Its ok, I am just amazed how quickly he went down hill..He is still fighting but he is standing on his tail right now...once in a while he will swim around. I separated him to make sure he would not be bothered.

Good evening, at this point you can try this if he is still with us, the measurements are for a ten gallon tank so adjust to whatever small tank you have to use as a hospital tank, 10gal tank, tank water from one of the other tanks just a plain tank no decor no gravel or nothing one of two air stones, 2 table spoons of pepto yes pepto bismol, mixed well and put him in an tomorow do a 20% water change if you only have a 5gal tank just one table spoon of pepto no food for at least 10 days, good luck.

Me either. Bettas are very susceptible to the bloat so I'll have to remember that. I hate that cr@p myself though. I remember as a child my mother giving it to us. In fact I hate it so much I never gave it to my kids. LOL

http://goldfish-emergency.com/viewpage.php?page_id=4 Anyone ever been there before? Seems kinda helpful. My fish is a lot more stable. He still looks rough but he is now laying up right. Looks like he could be suffering from raised nitrates. I am not a huge goldfish person but the 2 I own have grown on me. This one always seemed to be the strongest and most zealous. C'mon Bullet!!!

Favorite Fish: : Tons - freshwater, no cichlids or salt yet. I have these tanks: 30 gal - tetras (neon, bloodfin, diamond, one Bosemani rainbow female
20 gal high - 6 choprae danio, cycling, mostly done
10 gal quarantine - 1 turquoise, 1 macie and 2 dwarf Rainbows, 3 black kuhli loarches quarantine from a tank that had gotten sick; will go into my community tetra tank and the 20 high when all is confirmed to be ok.
Have set up my 20 gal long for an oranda goldfish; she'd be in there now if the store hadn't dropped her and now we don't know if she'll make it....look to put two orandas in my 40 breeder when I get it set up!
Also looking at getting a 27 gal cube and stand on sale and Petsmart but don't know where I'd put it!

I'm so sorry to hear it. My 3 goldfish are the most fun to watch. The original, Penelope, is so friendly, almost cuddly. She's a hoot. I bought her two babies who are still in quarantine in the 20 long tank. They are getting over their confusion and are swimming around pretty well now.

Maybe if his buddy died he was having loss issues and his immune system was weakened.

Sorry for your loss.

Most likely was, I never was great with goldfish. That tank is pretty bare right now as I have had many issues since they died.

It's hard to lose one, though. I really love Penelope.

She never quits rushing around, she loves to snuffle in her sand and zoom through her two bubble wands, and loves it when I come to the tank and she swims along the front following my hand. I would not know what to do if I lost her. Kind of scary.

It's funny how well fish adjust to us. My Jack Dempsey and Convicts are the same way. When I walk by they get excited. LOL
