Frio had suffered an injury from his fin so I had him in a jar to treat him. He's been fine but all of a sudden he started swimming in rapid circles with his head pointing down, then he just went still. He stopped breathing and just flared his gills out. Panicking, I tried to start moving him around to get him moving again but he wouldn't. Took him out of his jar and rubbed his side lightly until he started trying to breath again. Now he's breathing (I can see his gills moving) but he's at the bottom of the tank and won't move even his little front fins. Please, please help. I don't know what happened so suddenly. He's been fine. The water is a little cold, but surely it wouldn't have suddenly had such an affect on him? He's not bloated, and his fins are shredded but they've been worse. What's going on and how do I save my fish?!!

Now he's trying to swim a little along the bottom of his jar. Maybe he'll live through this!! Please please help ASAP. x_X If I lose this fish I'm going to cry.

Yeah, I'm giving up now. There's nothing I can do at this point for such a small, fragile little creature. If he makes it, I suppose he makes it.

I'd like to figure out WHAT happened at the very least, though.... It almost looked like a fish version of a violent seizure. He was fine one second, and the next he had his gills and fins flared out as far as he could, swimming in rapid circles with his head tilted down and the whole front half of his body jerking.

I'm really panicking thinking that the medicine I use for his torn fins was a bad medicine and it built up in his system this time. If it is that... nngghh. x_x I've used this medicine for torn fins for MONTHS, and I've used a lot more in his hospital jar without changing the water every day before... nothing ever happened. This just happened so fast.

Also, possible new symptom.. something I've never, ever seen a beta do. He's barely breathing, but every couple of minutes he'll flare his gills out far and gape his mouth at the surface of the water like he's gasping, and air bubbles will come out of his gill slits.

I think I might have successfully rescued him... Checked the water temp in his jar and it was down to 70 degrees. Started slowly warming the water by floating the jar in a warm water filled tub a ware and now Frio is much more active, with his front little fins constantly moving and breathing easy. He's having some extreme buoyancy issues, though, and can't move his rear end at all.

I'm thinking the temperature paired with the stress from his torn fins and the change to his hospital jar made him a bit constipated (has been eating but not giving anything out) and its affected his swimbladder... when he was panicking and stopped breathing for short amounts of time, I think he was having hypothermia issues.

If he is bloated you'll want to fast him for 4-5 days. Stop all foods.

That's the thing, he's not bloated at *all*. Aside from that though, everything that is happened seems to coincide with the symptoms for hypothermia and swimbladder due to constipation.

I kept him in 80 degree water through out the night and now he can wiggle his rear end again, swimming slightly. Still just floats upright pitifully at the top. Not sure if I trust the medicine I got for his even more shredded fin now. When he was spazzing at, evidently he managed to horribly rip his tail fin 3 more times. He's just a pitiful looking guy right now, but I think he's gonna make it.

Melafix: Fish First Aid

I got it in an emergency since I didn't have the time to order BettaRevive when I needed it last and haven't dropped by the fish dedicated store for over a month and a half. It shares a smell with my cocker spaniel's very powerful yeast infection ear medicine.

Anywho, Frio made it through the school day and keeps improving. Now he can swim pretty well with his wiggle and slightly using his back fin. He'd be able to swim better if he hadn't shredded it even worse when he was thrashing about and I was trying to net him to save him. His buoyancy is even a little better today... nudged him gently with my finger and instead of bobbing up and down like a toy, he moved to avoid my finger, swam down a tiny bit, and then let himself float back up.

NEVER EVER use Melafix on a Betta. It is very toxic to them. I know some people say they use it but I don't recommend it.

Why do you have to redo everything?

I'm extremely unhappy with the gravel I have, and I'm relocating to a splitted 10 gallon for either a duo of females on the other side or another male. So I figured I might as well perfect my set up in the process.

I might even buy yet another filter... I don't like the sponge filter for this one, cause it can't suck extra food in.

There should be no extra food. Bettas stomacks are only the size of there eyeball. That is all they should be fed twice a day. If you're feeding pellets then 4-5 pellets at each feeding is enough.

I'm aware. I have tank mates for my Betta that will keep him away from the food for quite awhile, so I have to feed a little more than I would normally for him to have any chance at eating. Sometimes the extra ends up sinking to the bottom, other times there is no extra. I'm extremely careful to watch for bloating.

Edit;

Scratch that. I thought you could keep females in pairs, but evidently not.

After reading all the post. I think your problem is over feeding. I feed bettas once a week. Feed live black worms. Wait a half an hour and then do a 100 percent water change and any uneatin worms are removed. My bettas are keep in 9 oz. cups.

ONCE A WEEK ! WHAT? How do they live by feeding them only once a week. Never heard of that! One a day or twice a day with fasting one day a week.

Dr. Who, even I know that is horrible advice. I do need high quality food that aren't flakes, I know, but my fish was bloated and over fed once... when he decided to eat two ghost shrimp in a 24 hour period.
